06 Jul 2016
Well done to the prize winners in the Wrekin College Young Musician of The Year 2016:
Wrekin College has crowned flautist Emily Burton as its Young Musician of the Year.
This inaugural competition saw pupils of all musical abilities participate in one of 5 preliminary rounds. These were held in the following disciplines Strings, Brass, Woodwind, Piano and Voice. To encourage as many as possible to enter there were 3 categories in each section ‘Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced’. The winners of the Elementary and intermediate categories received prizes in Chapel and the winner of the Advanced category in each heat then went on to compete in the Grand Final. This was held in the Centenary Theatre at Wrekin College on May 12th.
Judged by internationally-renowned oboist, Anthony Robson, the standard from all seven finalists was first class with Emily, aged only 12, just coming out on top with her performance of Chaminade’s Concertino for Flute. Emily is currently in Lancaster house and as well as being an outstanding Flautist (she currently plays for the National Children’s Orchestra) she also plays Violin, Piano and Cello! Emily will be presented with her cup on Speech Day!
In second place was Trombonist Mark Nicholls. Mark is in the Upper Sixth and a member of Bayley house where he is Head of House. In addition to this Mark is the leader of the College Jazz Band, a member of the Concert Band and also sings Bass in the Chapel Choir, he leaves the College this year and hopes to study Veterinary Science.
In third place was international student Atahan Camlibell. Atahan who joins us from Turkey is currently in the fourth form, and has recently gained a distinction in his grade 8 ABRSM piano exam. As well as being a fine pianist Atahan is also learning to play the Organ and is also learning Orchestral percussion.
