Wrekin College – A-Levels and Apprenticeships 2018

31 Aug 2018

The Headmaster of Wrekin College, Tim Firth, said they were delighted with an excellent set of results which saw more leavers get the top A* grades, more achieve the A*-C pass rate than last year and students take their pick of university places and highly coveted apprenticeships.

Particular successes included Andy Liu who heads to Cambridge to study mathematics leaving Wrekin with seven and a half A levels, six of them A* and the top mark for an Extended Project. These include A* grades in Maths, Further maths and Additional Further Maths which he passed last year when he achieved the top score in the country – a year younger than his contemporaries.

Joe Lee heads off to read history at Cambridge having also secured a scholarship to Sandhurst.

Holly Townson will take up her place to study Medicine, where she will also continue to train as a nationally good swimmer.

Tim Firth said “More Wrekin leavers got top A* grades this year than last year’s excellent number, despite the toughening up of exams that everyone has heard about. We are delighted that these very able and worthy students have excelled here.”

While students have won places at a variety of top universities including Warwick, Imperial, Nottingham and UCL Mr Firth said he was also encouraged to see successful students choose prestigious apprenticeships.
“Not all our leavers have applied to university this year, but are taking up apprenticeships including Henry Owen who has gone on to Handlesbanken, one of Sweden’s leading banks.”

The uptake of apprenticeships reflects a national trend, which has seen many students choose alternatives even though they have gained top marks.

“Wrekin’s Business School is teaching pupils about employability and linking them with employment opportunities, and it is great to see our students taking these up,” Mr Firth added.

Our overseas students also did exceptionally well, Mr Firth said “Our overseas’ boarders operating in a second language, have been so well supported here. Milana Muratova, Malinda Davies,  Shertam Banasanprasit and Andy Liu each gained more than three A grades, and Mihail Dodon achieved five A Levels at A or B grade. These students have been superb role models for their peers and those in the younger years and are ready to be employed at a high level now. At Wrekin we work with students from around the world.”

Congratulations to everyone who did so well, all your hard work has paid off.
