Wellington School Pupils Win Inter-Schools Debating Competition

15 Jan 2016

Wellington School pupils beat off hot competition in the first round of the English Speaking Union Mace Debating competition.  Sixth Form students Will Langdon and Henry Vyse competed at Exeter College against several local schools and qualified for the next round. They opposed the motion that This House believes that all non-violent criminal offenders should receive non-custodial sentences. The panel was a group of students from the Exeter University Debating Team.

The ESU Mace Debating is the largest schools debating competition in the UK with 350 schools entering each year. Will and Henry will now go through to the Regional Finals in Bristol in March.

“We have a strong tradition of public speaking and debating within the School”, commented Rupert Marsh, who organises the ESU team. “The ESU competitions are the more formal wing of the many debating competitions that the School enter and run, including MUN and BP style debates run by students’ unions and, of course, the lively house debates.”

“We look forward to the Regional Finals and hope they will successful,” concluded Mr Marsh.
