UK’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer opens Stonyhurst’s new science lab

28 May 2014

A brand new science laboratory at Stonyhurst’s prep school St Mary’s Hall was officially opened by a top scientist this week. Professor John Watson, who was educated at Stonyhurst, is the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England. His main focus is health protection, including immunisation, anti-microbial resistance and emergency preparedness and response to health threats such as pandemic influenza. Professor Watson is an Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Visiting Professor at University College London.

Professor Watson met pupils at the college and at the prep school, and gave a fascinating talk about his work and current health issues to sixth form science students.

The Head of St Mary’s Hall, Larry Crouch, said: “The new science lab means that all our pupils at St Mary’s Hall, including the youngest, now get lab experience and are enjoying performing a wide range of experiments in the brand new, fully equipped facility. We were delighted Professor Watson could be here to open it for us.”
