TENNIS AND ATHLETICS SUCCESS
21 Jul 2013
It has been an impressive sporting week for athletics and tennis at Farlington.
Amy Fitzpatrick and Gabriella Eltham of Farlington School represented the South East at the National Prep Schools’ Athletics Championships on Tuesday 2nd July at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham
Amy competed in the Under-14’s 75m hurdles. She comfortably won her heat qualifying for the final. She lined up for the final two hours later and, after her trademark slow start, never looked anywhere else other than at the finish line. She drew in the other runners, glided over the hurdles beautifully and crossed the line in 1st place to become the National Prep Schools U14 75m Hurdle Champion.
Amy also competed in the U14 100m event. She ran in the 3rd heat which proved to be the fastest and although finished 2nd unfortunately she was just outside the qualifying times.
Gabriella had two top 10 finishes in the long jump and the 800m event. After three jumps she made it through to the last eight with a jump of 4.02m and therefore received one more jump. Again Gabriella improved her distance to 4.08m and finished in 7th position. For the 800m event she came 4th in her heat with a time of 2.40secs. The next heat proved to be a quicker race and Gabriella finished overall in 10th place.
Sara Whittaker, Director of P.E. and Games at Farlington, said, ‘It was a great day for athletics at Farlington and we are all very proud of Gaby and Amy’.
Representing the school for tennis, Sophie Kitson and Alexandra Malzer competed in the Ralph Cake Independent Schools Tennis Tournament at Eton School on Monday 1st July. 39 pairs started the event and the girls won all their matches on the first day putting them into the main draw. The second day saw them again playing well as a doubles pair, winning all but one match. The girls got down to the last eight pairs and just missed going through to the semi-finals. A great achievement for their first visit to this tournament!
