Stonyhurst – Cadets plant trees for the Woodland Trust, and Operation Reflect

04 Mar 2016

An impressive tree-planting exercise took place this week, when 400 tree saplings were planted in just 45 minutes!
The trees were planted by the Stonyhurst Combined Cadet Force, on the Peel Estate near Newton-in-Bowland. The green-fingered exercise continues the Stonyhurst CCF’s association with the Woodland Trust and Operation Reflect, which is in commemoration of the First World War.

Lt Col. Andrew Barber, Contingent Commander of the Stonyhurst CCF, said: “The cadets worked extremely hard, and with great efficiency! The ground underfoot was saturated from all the recent rain but this did not deter, or diminish their enthusiasm.” Afterwards, the cadets were thanked by Kate Gordon of the Woodland Trust, and members of the family who live on the estate.

In September 2014, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Stonyhurst as Patron of the Woodland Trust’s Centenary Woods Project. She planted a tree alongside 301 oak saplings planted by the CCF. Each tree represented a serviceman from Stonyhurst College who died in the First World War.
