Staines Prep Proudly Represent Spelthorne in 20th Anniversary Celebrations
29 May 2012
Twelve Year 5 pupils representing Staines Prep accompanied the Mayor of Spelthorne, Councillor Sam Budd, and other European officials to Melun in France on the 6 May – 14 May. The visit marked the 20th anniversary of the twinning of the two towns and celebrated their annual European Week.
The Melun European Week is part of a special project set up to commemorate the end of the Second World War. It specifically involves pupils from Melun primary schools and children from its respective twin towns around Europe – Spain, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Poland, Greece and the UK.
The project includes a series of cultural, sports and social events. Attending a French school, this year the children were treated to specialist French cookery classes. They took part in a variety of art projects and spent a day in Paris. The week concluded with the children performing in the town theatre.
French co-ordinator Miss Claire Eastaugh said: “We are grateful to the people of Melun for providing our pupils with such a rich and rewarding experience. It will encourage them to develop their language skills further in school and I am sure it will continue to benefit them in later life. I was delighted to see how well they all worked with children from so many different countries.”
