St Swithun’s Junior School U9 team won the Portsmouth Grammar School netball tournament last week.
The team were placed in a group with Highfield, Hampshire Collegiate, Amesbury, Durlston A and Guildford High. The St Swithun’s shooters were in fine form and the team won the first two matches 8 – 0 and 7 – 0. They then went on to win the other three matches taking them into the semi- final.
The semi-final was against the hosts PGS and the girls raised their game to win 7 – 0. The final encounter was a rematch against Guildford High. Guildford quickly raced out to a 3 – 0 lead at half time and St Swithun’s girls looked a little shell shocked. However the team stepped up their game and battled hard to claw back one goal, then another and, with very little time left, scored the equaliser to make it 3-3 and to take it to extra time. At the end of extra time, and with the teams level at 4 – 4, the match then went to ‘golden goal’. The precision of the St Swithun’s shooter made the difference and with a long range shot, she secured the match 5 – 4 and the winner’s title for St Swithun’s.
St Swithun’s Junior School director of sport Roger Marshall said ‘It was a fantastic result for the girls as the determination and skill they had shown throughout the day, but especially in the final, was outstanding’.
The team were: Isabella Bruce, Imogen Watson, Grace Clark, Emilia Richards, Holly Gates, Amelia Johns, Emily Maclay and Hermione Murray
