St Swithun’s Junior Olympic week
25 May 2012
Last week St Swithun’s Juniors enjoyed a packed week of Olympic activities and events.
Steph Twell, young Olympic runner and 2010 Commonwealth Games medallist joined the Juniors for an assembly and training workshops. After talking with the children about the highs and lows of her athletic career thus far, Steph led three workshops where the children learnt about warm up techniques, body posture and different types of training.
On Wednesday the whole school excitedly watched divers Emily Alderman and Abbie Baker in a display at St Swithun’s pool. Abbie, age 13 from Owslebury, currently in Year 8 at St Swithun’s and swimming at international level, has been awarded a training grant as one of ‘Hampshire’s Talented Athletes’. Emily, daughter of pool manager Mark Alderman, has won 16 British titles as well as gaining 5th place in the European Junior Championships and 8th in the World Junior Championships
The Juniors also enjoyed judo displays carried out by both teachers and pupils plus a full day of tennis workshops for all pupils.
The Olympic week concluded with a whole school rendition of the National Anthem with children as young as Year 2 playing their instruments and singing along, joined of course by Olympic mascot, Wenlock.
