Upper Sixth student George Black was one of two boys selected to represent Team GB in Alpine Ski racing at the Youth Olympics, in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of North East Italy.
George, who joined Millfield in Year 9, is a boarder from Suffolk. Since joining Millfield he has enjoyed playing Rugby and has been representing the 3rd XI. He said, “Getting involved with other sports at school has been fun and is also great fitness and agility training for my skiing.”
George commented “The experience of representing my country at the Youth Olympics was amazing. When we arrived at the team base, we were given a large bag of branded Team GB kit. I have represented GB before at international U16 races, but this was special as we also had the chance to meet athletes from all the other winter sports, and we all joined together at the Closing Ceremony in Udine”.
George competed in Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Super G at the event and added, “My favourite and strongest discipline is Giant Slalom, I was pleased with my 28th place out of 100 of the best racers in Europe.”
George, who is studying a BTEC Enterprise, has been supported by his teachers at school so that he is still able to complete his academic work on top of attending races and training sessions. George added “My business teacher is very supportive, and helps me catch up on any missed work.”
