Roald Dahl week at St Swithun’s Junior School

09 Nov 2015

Pupils at St Swithun’s Junior School, Winchester enjoyed a week of Roald Dahl focused activities. Years 3-6 participated in a workshop entitled a Taste of Dahl with actor Anthony Pedley, known for his work both on television and stage. Pupils from Reception to Year 6 were then entertained in the afternoon with Mr Pedley’s one man performance of Roald Dahl’s The BFG, complete with sparkling bottles of dreams, ‘belly-poppers’ (helicopters), and the inevitable whizzpoppers.

In the school’s new atrium, teacher Mrs Brill organised a Dreams Jar competition where pupils had to guess which “dreams” came from books they had previously read in literacy lessons.

The week was concluded with a Roald Dahl character dressing-up morning. The not-so-enormous crocodile sat cheek-by-jowl with Willy Wonka, a giant peach and Miss Tunchbull with several Oompa-loompas looking on.

Headmistress Pim Grimes said “The children have had a really enriching and creative week. Roald Dahl contributes so much to our children’s childhood and allows us adults to remember how it feels to be young. One of my favourite Roald Dahl quotes is, ‘A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men!’ from Charlie and The Great Glass Elevator”.
