14 Mar 2012
Eight Royal Hospital School crews took part in the Thameside 2 race from Reading to Marlow on Sunday 4 March. Despite very bad weather, all performed well completing the 18-mile and 8 portage race in less than 4 hours. Errol Drummond, 18, and Rhys Evans, 17, set a new school record for this event in 2 hours 39 minutes.
On Sunday 11 March the Devizes to Westminster team took part in the Waterside C race and won the Junior Section. The race was 23 miles long with 35 portages on the Kennet and Avon Canal in Wiltshire. Errol Drummond and Rhys Evans set another school record of 3 hours and 43 minutes and all the crews finished within 5 hours. Monty Beaton/Luke Jones and Joe Simmons/Toby Seabright completed the race in less than 4 hours.
This means that RHS Paddlers are now ranked the top school team in England!
On Friday 16 March our eight crews face a challenging 32 mile paddle with 34 portages on the River Chelmer in the final qualifying event for this year’s Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Marathon. They need to complete in less than 7 hours to qualify.
