PRIOR PARK CONCERT RAISES £600 FOR CHARITY

15 May 2014

Over sixty students from Prior Park College took part in a school concert in Midsomer Norton, raising £600 for Christian Aid.

On Thursday evening, more than sixty students from Prior Park College travelled to Midsomer Norton to perform a charity concert in the Methodist church to raise money for Christian Aid. With soloists and groups ranging from Year 7 to Year 13, the repertoire on the night was varied and hugely impressive.

The concert kicked off at 7.30pm, with a toe-tapping performance from the school’s Concert Band, who played a range of favourites such as Copacabana, all the way to Sabre Dance by Khatchaturian. Next was the turn of the Wind Quartet, one of many Prior ensembles who achieved success recently in the Mid-Somerset Music Festival. The school’s Chamber Strings then performed two movements from Elgar’s Serenade, followed by a couple of mesmerising Renaissance madrigals from the Schola Cantorum, an elite group drawn from the College’s well-known Chapel Choir. The Brass Ensemble closed the first half with some fabulous performances, of which the Abba Medley was particularly popular. The second half of the concert comprised impressive trombone, organ and vocal solos, as well as a rousing tune by the hugely popular Sax Quartet. Finally, this wonderful concert was brought to a close by Big Band, currently preparing for their Bath Festival appearance, who joined the Year 13 Cambridge choral scholar, Harriet Garner, to give a wonderful rendition of Adele’s Skyfall. All proceeds from ticket sales went directly to Christian Aid and everyone was delighted to discover that no less than £600 had been raised on the night.

Mr Roland Robertson, Director of Music at the College, described the event as “not just a great opportunity for our students to play to a new public, in a fine building, and in such a good cause, but great fun too!”
