New Outdoor Classroom & Nature Trail – Shebbear College
29 Oct 2020
Our new Nature Trail and Outdoor Classroom area – The Friends’ Trail – has been a brilliant setting for several lessons across the Prep and Senior School over the last few weeks. Outdoor learning has always been a big part of what we do at Shebbear College, and now, with this being more important than ever, we are trying to take more and more lessons outside, appreciate the natural world around us and make the most of our fantastic campus and space.
In Outdoor Education, Form 1 (Year 7) and Form 2 (Year 8) both enjoyed sessions in the area, learning how to use the Duke of Edinburgh stoves, making nettle soup and tea, making their own fires and, very importantly, toasting marshmallows around the fire pit!
Meanwhile, Prep 6 used the area to gather ideas and inspiration for their descriptive writing in their English lesson. They came up with some great similes and metaphors – we love these ones:
‘The young saplings stood as tall as giraffes on the African Savanna.’
‘The early morning dew drops were precious jewels scattered on the glistening grass.’
