19 Aug 2014

Former pupil Ryan Spencer-Jones (St David’s House 1997-2005) has been chosen as part of a 33 strong Athletics team to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games in July and August. Ryan will compete in the Shot Put at the Games, taking place in Glasgow’s Hampden Park from 23rd July to 3rd August. This will be Ryan’s second Commonwealth Games as he competed in the 2010 event in Delhi, finishing 10th with a throw of 16.66 metres. Ryan is going into the 2014 Games in great form, having set a Personal Best of 18.32 metres in Loughborough last month. Welsh national performance coach Scott Simpson said: “I have been stunned by the response of the Welsh athletes to the impending Commonwealth Games … their performance levels over recent weeks have sky-rocketed!”

Last Saturday (7th June), former Christ College pupil Kieran Marmion (St David’s House 2003-2008) earned his first senior rugby cap for Ireland in their 29-17 win in their 1st Test versus Argentina. After 5 years at Christ College, Kieran spent 2 years at Kirkham Grammer School and was a key player in their highly successful Sevens squad. Kieran has been capped by Ireland at various under-age levels, including playing for the U18 and U20 teams. He made his debut for Ireland U20 in June 2011 in the IRB Junior World Championship, starting in every game for Ireland U20 in that tournament. He also started for Ireland U20 in their historic 19-23 win against South Africa U20 in June 2012, in the opening game of the 2012 IRB Junior World Championship. He was named in the Ireland squad for the 2013 tour to North America and in January 2014, he was named in Ireland’s extended 44-man squad for the 2014 Six Nations Championship. He came off the bench for Ireland Wolfhounds in their friendly against England Saxons in January 2014, and he made his first appearance for the senior Ireland side last Saturday, coming on as a second half replacement against Argentina.

Our congratulations to them both!
