Oswestry School make a pledge and sign the Armed Forces Covenant

19 Jul 2018

Mr Julian Noad, Headmaster of Oswestry School, and his wife recently attended a formal ceremony at RAF Shawbury to sign the Armed Forces Covenant.

The Covenant is a pledge or promise from the nation to those who serve, or have served, and their families, which says we will do all we can to ensure they are treated fairly and not disadvantaged in their day-to-day lives. It is signed by businesses and charitable organisations who wish to demonstrate their support for the Armed Forces community. The government is committed to supporting the Armed Forces community by working with a range of partners who have signed the Armed Forces Covenant. The Covenant brings together the government, businesses, local authorities, charities and the public in order to support those who serve.

Oswestry School has made a range of written promises to set out their support to members of the Armed Forces community who may consider sending, or who already have, children at Oswestry School.

The school has committed to endeavour to uphold the key principles of the Armed Forces Covenant which are that no member of the Armed Forces community should face disadvantage in the provision of public and commercial services compared to any other

citizen, and that in some circumstances special treatment may be appropriate especially for the injured or bereaved.

They have also pledged to recognise the value that serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families bring to the school and will promote the fact that they are an Armed Forces-friendly organisation. In this Oswestry School shall strive to support the employment of Service spouses and partners along with offering a degree of flexibility in granting leave for Service spouses and partners before, during and after a partner’s deployment. They shall also seek to support employees who choose to be members of the Reserve forces, offer support to local cadet units, aim to participate in Armed Forces Day and offer specific discounted boarding places for children of serving Armed Forces personnel.

Mr Noad commented, “We are very proud to be part of this initiative. The school has always had a close connection to the Armed Forces, both through our CCF and the support we offer to Service families and we are more than happy to cement this relationship with formal promises.”
