Off-Curriculum World Book Day – Oakhyrst Grange School
11 May 2020
On Thursday 5th March, we celebrated World Book Day. We began the day with a whole school assembly which ended up with a costume parade by Lower Kindergarten. They all brought along with them the books that had inspired their costumes, but they looked so fabulous, we were able to guess without even looking at the book titles!
After the assembly, Kindergarten began working on writing their own versions of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and Year 1 focused on ‘Room on the Broom’. Years 2-6 split up into seven groups of about 14 children and rotated through different book inspired activities throughout the rest of the day. Activities included invisible ink writing inspired by the Harry Potter series, making maps based on Katherine Rundell’s ‘The Explorer’, drama and invitation writing based on ‘Alice in Wonderland’, woodland activities inspired by the Famous Five adventures, art activities based on Roald Dahl’s ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’, maths activities inspired by Gulliver’s Travels and making an iMovie to celebrate reading. As you can see, we covered a lot of curriculum areas!
A very enjoyable and fun day was had by all.
