Mike, who moved to the UK from South Africa two years ago, brings over 23 years of experience in education encompassing roles as a teacher, sports coach, head of house and houseparent. His extensive background in both state and independent schools in boys’ and co-educational environments positions him well to take on this vital role in our school community.

Mike and his family were immediately drawn to West Buckland’s countryside setting, which he described as familiar and welcoming. “What struck me about West Buckland is how well it balances academic rigour with pastoral care, which is something that resonates with me deeply. The school offers an exciting blend of tradition and innovation with excellent boarding facilities and a holistic approach to education,” said Mike. He fondly recalls his first impression of the campus, comparing it to Hogwarts with its integration of new and historic buildings.

At Parker’s House, Mike is committed to fostering an environment that allows students to be themselves and grow into the best versions of who they are. “We aim to create a home-like environment that offers independence but within a structure of support. Our goal is to guide students without stifling their individuality, helping them to thrive in a safe, nurturing environment,” he added.

One of Mike’s key goals is to build stronger connections within the boarding community by encouraging collaboration between senior students in Parker’s and younger boarders in Boyer and Bamfylde houses. “Creating opportunities for older students to support juniors, particularly academically, will help strengthen the sense of community. It’s about preparing students for the real world, fostering connections and encouraging a sense of belonging across all boarding houses.”

In addition to academic development, Mike believes in the importance of extracurricular involvement. “With so many activities on offer at West Buckland, I encourage students to get involved. A well-rounded school experience should include a balance between academics and personal development, and I hope to see students making the most of the school’s excellent facilities and ECAs.”

Mike’s enthusiasm for his new role is palpable. “I am both nervous and excited about getting to know the students quickly in this new environment. My advice to all boarders is to embrace the opportunities here—get outdoors, stay active and engage with everything West Buckland has to offer.”

Mike’s guiding principle is simple: “Work hard, play hard and fall asleep.” He is eager to see this approach resonate with the students under his care and looks forward to the positive impact he can make at Parker’s House.
