Millfield Prep – Shapwick Brothers Raise Thousands for Cerebral Palsy Charities in Golf Tournament With Rugby Heroes

25 Aug 2017

Millfield Prep pupil, Freddie Turnell and his brother Harry from Shapwick have raised over £6000 for cerebral palsy charities after organising an inaugural golf day with top former national and international rugby players Sir Gareth Edwards and Matt Perry.

The boys organised the event at Burnham and Berrow Golf club, which saw the brothers partnered with their sporting heroes. Bath Fullback Matt Perry partnered with Freddie, while former Wales Rugby star Sir Gareth Edwards partnered with Harry, who has cerebral palsy. In total, 70 players made their way around the course, with BBC and ITV sports broadcaster John Inverdale also taking part.

The funds raised will be going towards supporting a young person who has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy who participates in a sporting field. The money will be used to buy equipment to enhance their sporting life.

Old Millfieldian and former Wales National Sir Gareth Edwards said: “It has been many years since I have played at Burham and Berrow Golf Club, which I remember from my school days at Millfield. I very much enjoyed the chance to play with the boys and to raise some money for such a fantastic cause. The standard was quite high, with Freddie currently performing so well on the circuit himself. Both boys were incredibly professional and fantastic players; they conducted themselves in the best possible manner.”

Former Bath Fullback Matt Perry said: “What an absolute pleasure it was to play golf with Freddie, and to meet Harry for their inaugural Charity Golf Day. They are an inspiration to all with their attitude, manners and golfing talent. Both boys are a credit to their family, friends and Millfield as an organisation.”

Year 7 pupil Freddie Turnell recently won the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS) National Boys Golf Championships in the Under 14 division, is the current ISGA Boys National Champion and has recently competed in the Under 12 Division at the World Golf Championships in North Carolina, USA.

The date for next year’s event will be Friday 27th April 2018.
