Millfield Prep Junior Creative Arts Day: Africa

16 Aug 2017

Pupils from Years 3, 4 and 5 fully immersed themselves in African culture during a Creative Arts Day, which saw them learn some of the native language, dance, art and music of Africa.

The day began with a Skype call to Kenton College, a school in Kenya, where the pupils learned some Kiswahili from the native speakers. Following this, the children rotated around different activities, including a ‘call and response’ Palogo drumming session, an African Masai dance lesson, and the chance to create some Tinga-Tinga art. Some pupils also worked with the kitchen to create an African style menu for lunch, including Nigerian ‘Egusi’ and Kenyan ‘Ugali.’

The Year 3 pupils later performed some Masai dance, while pupils in Year 4 performed a gumboot dance, and pupils in Year 5 performed a hip-hop street style dance.

Finally, the pupils learned and performed two African songs, including ‘Maliswe,’ a song written in several African languages.

At the end of the day the pupils came together to combine what they had learnt and showcased an amazing performance of dance, art and singing.
