Millfield Groundsman Achieves an A in AS Literature 25 Years After Leaving School

25 Aug 2017

Millfield groundsman Colin Ashman, who has worked for the school for over 25 years, has achieved an A grade in his AS English Literature course after being unable to complete it when he was at school.

Encouraged by Millfield English teachers Caroline Burn and Lindsey Hale and Head of English, James Baddock, Colin pursued his passion for literature through independent study and homework set by the teachers. In the build up to the examinations this summer, Colin joined Lower Sixth English Literature pupils to attend two Millfield evening revision sessions and sat his exams alongside the pupils.

Having juggled his studies with caring for his four children, all under 8, and a full-time job, Colin credits the help from his family and teachers as the reason for his success. He plans to continue his studies to achieve his A2 next year, and potentially go on to further study through the Open University.

Colin said: “I want to thank all the teachers and staff that have gone out of their way to help me achieve this personal goal. How everyone could see something in me that I have hidden my entire adult life is a credit to their teaching prowess, and I’m so pleased for everyone involved that I could reflect their effort with my own. My A grade stands for altruism, because I never would have achieved this alone.”

Craig Considine, Millfield Headmaster said: “It was a privilege to be able to help Colin achieve his dream to study English Literature and I wish him well with the second part of the A level course next year. His diligence and drive to complete a goal 25 years in the making is what we hope to instil in our pupils. I hope Colin’s story will inspire other members of the Millfield community to pursue their dreams in the future.”
