LVS Ascot Student Elected To Parish Council At 18 Years Old
04 Aug 2017
An LVS Ascot student has been elected to Winkfield Parish Council at just 18 years old. Jordan Masters, who has just completed his A-levels at the independent all-ability school, claimed victory for the Conservatives in the Ascot Priory ward by receiving 59% of the vote against Labour Party candidate Michael Karim. The election took place on Thursday 20th July.
Jordan has a strong interest in both the local and national issues that confront residents in their daily lives, and has a particular interest in the issues faced by younger people, wishing to promote their views on the council. He has honed his interest in politics whilst at LVS Ascot, in 2016 receiving two awards at the school’s prestigious President’s Day – the Peter Veal Prize for Law and the 6th form prize for Government and Politics. When receiving his awards he said: “I really do have a passion for the subjects and have enjoyed studying them, but it is down to a brilliant politics and law teacher that I have achieved it – I’m very proud”.
In June 2016 Jordan showed his talents and passion for politics by completing a week’s work experience at LVS Ascot in the office of Conor Burns, MP for Bournemouth West, Alderney and Branksome East. His tasks included keeping Mr Burns’ constituency diary, and organising his time with constituents which Jordan explained was “an important part of an MP’s job”. During the week he gained further crucial knowledge from sharing an office with the staff of Stephen Crabb, MP for Preseli. The work experience took place the week after the Brexit vote, and being amongst the country’s politicians at such an exciting and tumultuous spurred Jordan’s passion to become involved in politics. He even met Boris Johnson the day before he famously withdrew from the Conservative leadership race.
LVS Ascot Principal Christine Cunniffe said: “LVS Ascot is a special place where every student can flourish as an individual and exceed their expectations. Jordan is a prime example of that – his dedication has been fantastic in gaining the experience, supported by the school, that has allowed him to achieve this important position in the local community. We wish him all the best in his new role and look forward to following his political career with interest”.
A future in politics is not a first for an LVS Ascot student as John Moore, Baron Moore of Lower Marsh, spent ten years at LVS before going on to become an MP. He even held a cabinet position as Secretary of State for Transport under Margaret Thatcher in 1986. Baron Moore said: “At Licensed Victuallers’ School I learned to love history, and history gave me an enormous perspective on whatever I have done in politics. That came from the school”.
