LVS Ascot Records Rise In GCSE A* – C Grades – As National Figure Sees Sharpest Decline Ever
25 Aug 2016
Students at independent all-ability school LVS Ascot achieved an increase in GCSE A* – C grades to 83.8% as nationally the figure saw its sharpest ever drop, down to 66.9%.
With 83.8% achieving A* – C grades (up from 78.9% in 2015), and 57.9% of papers achieving A* – B grades compared with 53.1% last year, LVS Ascot has successfully helped students raise their grades in preparation for joining the 6th form which reported its highest ever A-Level pass rate last week.
Whilst nationally the gender gap was reported to have widened yet further, LVS Ascot has successfully almost eradicated the difference with 87.1% of boys achieving 5 A* – C grades including English and maths almost catching the equivalent 87.8% of girls.
Headline figures:
- Grade A* exam papers – 4.9%
- Grade A exam papers – 21.1%
- Grade A* and A exam papers – 26%
- Grade A* – B exam papers – 57.9%
- Grade A* – C exam papers – 83.8%
- Students with 5 or more A* – C grades – 90.1%
- Students with 5 or more A* – C grades inc. Maths & English – 87.4%
One student who demonstrated the difference that LVS Ascot has made in helping students surpass expectation is Ella Desmond, who joined in Year 9. Ella said: “I was told at my previous school that I wouldn’t get more than 5 A* – C grades and no higher than a D in English. I have just got 9 A* – C grades and my English was an A”. Ella will now be studying English literature, history and law at LVS Ascot sixth form and her mother Kate said: “Ella had been written off at her old school but LVS Ascot has given her so much confidence to achieve. The teachers have been fantastic and so have her peers. I am really proud of her”.
Sophie Douglas was another student celebrating after receiving 4A*, 5A and 2B after twelve years at the school and will go on to sit A-Levels in biology, chemistry and maths. Sophie played the lead role in a whole school production of Fame earlier this year, and received great support from teachers in balancing her studies with performing. Her mother Joan said: “LVS Ascot has given Sophie the belief to tackle anything and the confidence to try new things and be successful. She has done well academically but also been able to enjoy new things such as debating alongside being on stage in drama productions and representing the school at swimming, hockey and netball despite not being an A team sports player. That’s what is great about LVS Ascot, the opportunities to excel and experience things are open to all students”.
LVS Ascot Principal Christine Cunniffe said: “These results reflect a significant achievement. With a rise in A* – C grades against a sharp dip nationally our students continue to make excellent progress. We look forward to them contributing to our highly successful sixth form and continuing their all-through education with LVS Ascot”.
