LVS Ascot Celebrates Highest Ever A-Level Pass Rate

18 Aug 2016

LVS Ascot Principal Christine Cunniffe said she “couldn’t be more thrilled” after the independent all-ability school posted an excellent set of A-Level results which saw its best ever pass rate of 99.2% surpass the national average of 98.1%.

19.9% of grades were A or A*, a significant rise from 16.3% last year and a 63% increase on 2014’s 12.2%, against the national backdrop of a marginal fall in top grades for the fifth successive year . With just two ungraded papers out of 246, LVS Ascot boasted its highest ever pass rate, ensuring its success was shared by all students and highlighting the school’s expertise in helping all students succeed and reach their full potential.

32  departments (23 last year) boasted a 100% pass rate including music technology and six languages, whilst the Extended Project Qualification attracted an A* – B rate of 100%.

Headline figures are:

Major success stories included Head Girl Georgia Acton, whose A* and three As in French, Chemistry, Core Maths and German saw her celebrating a place at Bristol University. Georgia said: “I am really grateful to LVS Ascot for the support and teaching that has helped me achieve my goal, but also for the opportunity to be involved in so many other aspects of school life too”.

A brief interview with Georgia as well as an interview with fellow student Zoe Carlin and her proud mother can be seen here.

National level swimmer Abbie Johnson was also celebrating after gaining A* in Biology and A in Applied Maths, combined with a double BTEC to allow her to study Sport & Exercise Science at Birmingham University. Abbie broke her personal best at the British National Swimming Championships earlier this year in the 50m breaststroke where only the top 24 swimmers in the country qualified. She has also won four national competition medals for the school in the London 2012 Olympic swimming pool, and said: “I am really pleased to get such good results and be going to my first choice university. With an indoor swimming pool and gym on site at LVS Ascot I have been able to focus on studying and excelling at sport too”.  Abbie’s mum Helen added: “Abbie has been at LVS Ascot since Year 3 and the school has been such a huge part of her success, giving her confidence and support”.

Principal Christine Cunniffe said: “We are incredibly proud to receive such a good set of results, showing what a great place LVS Ascot is to study. Our results this year have been excellent, building on last year’s success when again our A and A* grades grew in contrast to the national picture. It is testimony to the skill and commitment of our staff that as a non-selective school we are able to inspire students and get the very best out of them”.

Head of Sixth Form Charlie Jenkins said: “We are delighted with this year’s results which are just reward for the hard work and talent of our students. Our sixth form options continue to make LVS Ascot an exciting place to study, maintaining the broadest possible A-Level curriculum with 35 courses at a time when other schools are cutting back what they offer due to financial pressure. We are also keeping our offering in sync with universities and as they are accepting an increasing number of BTECs LVS Ascot is also growing its courses in that area. Our Sport BTEC this year saw 100% of students receive distinction – distinction*”.
