King’s Gloucester – Technology Tournament

23 Jul 2019

On Wednesday 26th June two teams of four Fourth Form pupils attended the annual Rotary Club Technology Tournament, hosted at the University of Gloucestershire’s Oxstalls Campus.

This year, there were twenty teams from a dozen schools around the county.  The two King’s teams worked together well to attempt the difficult challenge of creating a crane that could manoeuvre underneath an archway and then remove a weight from a container, and return it to the starting point successfully.  The challenge gave the participants hands-on experience with applying theoretical principles to the design of their crane, and technology skills to realise it, in a practical context.  The nature of the competition was such that the teams had the chance to test and improve their designs and so gain an insight into the type of iterative problem solving regularly undertaken by engineers.
