Homefield Boys Continue Dominance of Aldro Inter-school Chess Championships
24 Feb 2016
Two Homefield teams travelled to the Aldro Inter-school Chess Championships buoyed by their results in this event in previous years. It was a very successful day for the boys with all of them exhibiting a great deal of grit and determination against several of the UK’s top chess school players.
The Homefield U8 team in particular has a long tradition of success at this event and, as such, it was to see them finish top of the U8 Major section and collect the trophy once again this year. With convincing wins over Aldro A, Magdalen Collage School (Oxford) and Twickenham Prep A, the team finished with a near perfect score of 11 out of 12. Given the fact that half of the team were making their debut for the school team at this event, this represents a remarkable achievement. Even more impressively, Homefield has now won the U8 event six years in a row, taking home the trophy on no less than 10 out of the previous 13 occasions.
Unfortunately, the U12 boys could not quite match the results of their younger counterparts. They got off to a difficult start with a defeat to the national champions Kings College School in the first round. However, not to be deterred, the team bounced back with hard-fought draws against Twickenham Prep and the Hawthorns to finish in a creditable fifth place.
Well done to everyone who took part, you certainly did your school proud.
