20 Jun 2013
Stephen Power, head of mathematics at St Swithun’s, Winchester, was invited as one of two representatives from the UK to participate in a festival to celebrate 20 years of the Mathematical Kangaroo competition. Mathematical Kangaroo is an international mathematical competition involving more than 40 countries across the world.
The festival took place between 15th- 18th of May in St Petersburg, Russia and the Kangaroo committee invited representatives from countries who have had long-term involvement in these international competitions. Stephen joined Andrew Jobbings, Vice-President of the “Kangaroo Sans Frontières” Association to represent the UK. They joined delegates from France, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan together with representatives from over 50 regions across Russia and around 70 high-performing Russian students and their families.
Over the course of the festival, the delegates discussed educational and mathematical curriculum developments and ideas for problem solving challenges to test the most able student mathematicians.
In addition, delegates enjoyed a variety of cultural activities including a night at the ballet and a visit to the State Hermitage: a museum with over a thousand rooms containing priceless treasures.
