We are delighted to announce that Millfield has appointed Gavin Horgan as Headmaster for September 2018.

Governors conducted a rigorous selection process over the summer months and Gavin was the outstanding candidate within an excellent field of applicants: he impressed us with his energy and vision. He strongly believes that Millfield must improve academically, continue to be exceptional in sports and the arts and ensure learning support is at the heart of the school’s offering.

Chairman of Governors, Roland Rudd, says, “We were impressed with Gavin’s clear comprehension of what makes for first class teaching and how he plans to assist ambitious and passionate teachers to reach their full potential in their classrooms, laboratories, studios and playing fields.”

Gavin has a history of academic excellence with a degree in Classics from the University of Oxford. He will be joining Millfield from Worksop College, where he has delivered academic turnaround aligned with a substantial building programme. His earlier career includes spells working internationally in schools in Sri Lanka and Argentina, before returning to the UK as the Deputy Head of The Glasgow Academy, an independent co-educational school with 1300 pupils. He is passionate about the outdoors and brings his wife, Alison, and young family to Somerset.

Outgoing Headmaster, Craig Considine, commented, “Gavin Horgan is an experienced leader who is exceptionally well placed to guide the Millfield community through the next stage of its development.”

Gavin Horgan added, “From my first visit to Millfield, I was taken with the sense of integrity and community at the school. It is an honour to have been asked to lead Millfield, which is already a world class school but one that is not prepared to be complacent. Alison and I are tremendously excited to be joining Millfield.”
