Farlington School – REMEMBRANCE DAY POPPIES

14 Nov 2014

On Tuesday 11th November Farlington Prep School held a Service of Remembrance to mark the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of World War 1.

Struck by the powerful image of the 888,246 poppies at the Tower of London, the girls also wanted to plant their own field of poppies. Each girl and member of staff made a poppy over the half-term break, ready to plant in the grass on their way in to the Service.

The Prep 5 and 6 readers reminded the audience of the importance of remembering facts, figures, birthdays, kindnesses and sacrifices. They shared the famous verses of ‘In Flanders Fields’ and ‘For the Fallen’.

Then, later, at 11am, a 2 minutes’ silence was held, encouraging the girls to think back over everything they had heard and seen, conveyed through images, those poems and the poppies.

Frances Mwale, Prep Headmistress, says “This week the girls have been learning a great deal about the World War I centenary: the older pupils have seen what war really meant to animals, families, nations, and younger pupils focused on remembering what other people have done for us. That iconic image of the poppy is so powerful: red blood surrounding black bullet holes. Our Remembrance Service this week echoed the same; how and why do we remember and how do we find hope in the darkest of days.”
