Farlington – Baking for Argentina
25 Feb 2014
For the past year Mikaela Loach in Farlington’s Year 11 has been raising funds so that she will be able to volunteer in Argentina this coming summer and last week she raised over £200 from one cake sale.
Her volunteer placement will be in the second largest city in Argentina, Córdoba, where she hopes to stay for three weeks: the first two weeks working in hospitals in impoverished areas and the final week working in one of the city’s many orphanages.
Mikaela says, “This project sounded perfect to me as, for an aspiring doctor, it combined invaluable medical experience with intensive daily Spanish lessons, and, most importantly, allowed me to offer help to those less fortunate than myself.
“Having already raised half of the needed funds for my trip through part-time jobs, and Christmas and birthday money, I was hungry for ideas on how to raise more money. As an avid baker, notorious for surprising students and teachers alike with subject-themed cupcakes on their birthdays, I knew a cake sale would be a wonderful and fun way to raise money.”
Mikaela arrived last week at Farlington with over 200 cakes, including rocky roads, chocolate chip cookies, triple chocolate chip brownies, chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, lemon cupcakes, and Oreo ice-cream cupcakes expecting many left-overs to be brought home. Incredibly, all the cakes were sold in less than 20 minutes, raising over £200 towards her volunteering trip.
