Epsom College – Third Form pupils brush up their mountain rescue skills

15 Jun 2017

On Thursday, Third Form pupils spent the day performing a Mountain Rescue activity on and around Box Hill in Surrey.

The pupils spent the morning recapping on essential map skills such as using a compass and bearings, contour lines, grid references and interpreting Ordnance Survey maps.

In the afternoon they set off on a trail, their mission being to rescue a lost walker.

The trail embedded the knowledge of the various topics they had covered in the morning such as compass use and asking questions along the way.

Once they had found the casualty, they then had to find an appropriate place for the rescue helicopter to land and they had to provide directions to find the casualty.

All of the pupils, particularly those groups who got lost along the trail, learnt some lessons about team work and the importance of using a compass which should prove useful in the future.
