Epsom College – Climbing the league ladder
07 Nov 2014
A significant leap in A Level results this summer has seen the College climb 44 places on last year’s performance in The Daily Telegraph’s Independent Schools A Level rankings, placing the College 79th in the 100 top performing schools in the country.
Epsom’s 2014 leavers recorded a set of results that are amongst the school’s best ever despite widespread media speculation that aggressive grade control could lead to a fall in the awarding of top grades.
Across the year group as a whole students have attained impressive results with 58% of A level entries graded at A* to A.
These excellent results are a tribute to the hard work of the pupils themselves and they are also testament to the high quality of teaching at the College, together with the academic and pastoral support of every teacher, tutor, Housemaster, HousemMistress and Matron.
Undoubtedly, this set of results has benefitted from the key strategic intent of the College to enhance the quality of teaching and learning to all pupils across all year groups. The revised working week, introduction of Heads of Year, Departmental MoTs and the development of the Cultural Hour at the College have contributed to this marked advancement of learning.
Of course, there is so much more to a good education than just exam results and league tables and the College is justly proud of its pupils’ commitment inside the classroom and to the varied life beyond the set academic syllabus. These results attend a year when the 1st XV and Colts XV were unbeaten, whilst the girls’ U16 and 1st XI hockey teams represented the College for the first time at the Regional Hockey Finals. A number of pupils also gained national honours in hockey, rugby, netball, cricket and music.
As the dust settles on the past academic year, it is gratifying to have Epsom’s ethos so richly endorsed and publicly recognised. It remains clear to all that it is perfectly possible to attain good academic grades and still be wholly committed to the rich and varied life of a school that believes in the breadth of an education.
