CHRIST COLLEGE’S TENNIS COACH NETS TOP AWARD

04 Mar 2014

CHRIST COLLEGE’S TENNIS COACH, CHRIS HILL, HAS BEEN AWARDED THE PRESTIGIOUS PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD AT TENNIS WALES’ ANNUAL AWARDS EVENING.

This is a tremendous achievement for Chris who has been coaching at Christ College for a number of years. Tennis is proving a popular sport all year round and last year Chris introduced winter tennis aerobics which is proving to be very popular.

Chris netted the prestigious ‘Player of the Year’ award at Tennis Wales’ annual awards evening. Chris has won over 70 titles in an illustrious playing career, including 20 national titles. In 2013, Chris successfully defended his British national doubles title at Wimbledon and was unbeaten in German and South Wales Leagues, and against the All England Athletic Club at Wimbledon.

He has been ranked 9th in the world by the International Tennis Federation in their Senior Mens’ Doubles ranking too.

Chris said: “It’s the highest accolade of the awards evening and to be honest, it’s right up there with my biggest ever wins. To be recognised by your peers is wonderful!”

Chris received his award from his boyhood hero, ATP Tour pioneer Mike Davies, a Wimbledon doubles finalist himself who played in the era of Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall.

With the new Junior Section coming to Christ College soon, Chris will be keen to identify the next potential Wimbledon Champion early.  He has experience at coaching 7-11 year olds and will be a wonderful addition to the Junior Section’s sports programme.

As well as being affiliated to Christ College, Chris has been senior tennis coach at Crickhowell Tennis Club for eight years, and has helped to develop coaching at Brecon Tennis Club too. He has a number of young tennis talents under his wing and is helping to develop the sport across Powys.
