Christ College’s CCF strike Gold at Sennybridge
07 Mar 2012
Over an extremely wet and cold September weekend Christ College CCF participated in the Cadet Cambrian patrol competition on Sennybridge ranges. Entering both a senior and junior team, the aim of the teams was to retain the Champion CCF trophy, against stiff challenges from the other Welsh CCF’s.
The final result was one that exceeded all expectations, with both Christ College teams winning Gold medals, two out of only six that were awarded to the Welsh Army Cadets or the Combined Cadet Force.
The junior team, led outstandingly by Tom Trumper were the only CCF to be awarded a medal, and a gold one at that. The senior team, led by Christ College CCF RSM, Morgan Thornber endured torrential rain on the Saturday night and Sunday morning to produce an excellent team performance.
CCF’s Contingent Commander, Major Ian Owen said: “This arduous event, in which the cadets are tested on many aspects of military fieldcraft as well as having to navigate their way round lengthy courses, was made even more so by the foul weather conditions presented on Sennybridge Training Area. Anyone who survived their course had to have put in an immense effort, both physically and mentally.”
He added: “Christ College did more than just survive, however, and both Junior and Senior Teams (led by Cdt Sgt Tom Trumper and Cdt WO Morgan Thornber respectively) reached the standards needed to be awarded Gold Medals – a more than just reward for the skills shown, the team spirit and the determination needed; all that epitomises the strengths of Christ College Cadets. As a result, the teams retained the trophy for best overall CCF and are firmly established as the team to beat in the event. Congratulations to all who took part, who, after a chance to recover, will no doubt be relishing the prospect of next year’s event!”
The event challenges the cadets in working together as a team, and brings out their leadership skills. They take part in activities such as patrolling, command tasks, First Aid and shooting skills.
Very many congratulations to all!
