The Renewable Energy Systems Welsh Sevens held at Llandovery RFC on March 14th saw a victory for Coleg Sir Gâr (CSG), who beat Ysgol Gwyr of Gowerton 45-12 in a one-sided final.
However the tournament will be remembered for the ‘game of the day’ which was the semi-final between the eventual winners and Christ College. The Christ College 1st VII were the only team that tested CSG in a memorable semi-final that lit up the tournament.
Christ College had impressed in the group stages with good wins over Ysgol Gyfun Bro Myrddin (21-19) and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni (26-0). This resulted in a quarter-final draw against the unbeaten Brynteg Comprehensive School from Bridgend. Christ College ran out convincing victors by 28-12, setting up a semi-final against CSG.
In the match of the tournament, CSG and Christ College were tied at three tries apiece early in the second half. CSG had tries from Adams, Lewis and Evans cancelled out by Brecon ripostes from Mo Althomen, Oli Blandford and Bentley Halpin, but the pure physicality and extra pace of the Llanelli boys then pulled them decisively clear.
CSG strolled through the final against a Gwyr side that was tired out after their heroics in causing the upset of the day, beating Millfield 24-14 in the other semi-final.
The host school, Llandovery College, went out to CSG 26-5 in the quarter-finals.
Both CSG and Christ College have posted notice that they will be teams to watch in the National Schools 7s being held in a fortnight’s time.
