15 Mar 2012
Earlier this term, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (the DofE) in Wales extended an invitation to the Head of Christ College Mrs Emma Taylor to join them at a special lunch to celebrate the work of the DofE Award Scheme in the principality.
The Brighter Futures lunch on October 13th was an opportunity to further promote the work of the DofE to a wide range of business people and potential new partners. The audience also comprised of several DofE operating authorities and their respective leaders.
Young DofE Participants and Award holders presented a fantastic Rough Guide to the DofE which showcased the wide breadth of what young people can do for the 4 sections of their DofE Award at Bronze and Silver. The audience was left in no doubt that the impact of the DofE on young people can really make a brighter future.
Guest of Honour at the lunch was HRH Earl of Wessex who was visiting Ceredigion to gain an insight into the development of the DofE in this area of Wales.
Mrs Taylor was joined at the event by Christ College’s DofE Co-ordinator Mr Clive Thomas and Mrs Velvor Raw-Rees, whose son Stefan is a DofE Gold Award holder. Also in attendance was Christ College governor Mr Guy Clarke OBE.
Mrs Taylor commented: “Christ College Brecon has a very successful record with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme. A high percentage of our pupils complete the Gold Award by the end of their Upper Sixth year. Most of our pupils begin their DofE journey in Form 4 (Year 10) with the Bronze award. The boarding school environment is ideal for helping pupils with the completion of their skills, physical recreation and community service.”
Mrs Taylor added: “We’re delighted to be a part of today’s event and we will continue to give the opportunity to young people from all walks of life to aspire to work towards the Gold Award and assist them in what is a life-changing experience.”
Stephanie Price, the DofE Director – Wales commented: “The Brighter Futures event provided a great environment in which to showcase the DofE programme and was also an opportunity to say thank you to our delivery partners such as Christ College who already recognise the value of the scheme for their pupils, supporting and encouraging them to take part. We were pleased that Mrs Taylor, her guest and members of the DofE team at the school were able to join us on this special occasion.”
