Christ College, Brecon – A LEVEL CELEBRATIONS FOR THE CLASS OF 2016
06 Oct 2016
THE LEAVERS OF 2016 GATHERED AT CHRIST COLLEGE FOR THE FINAL TIME TO COLLECT AND HELP CELEBRATE THEIR A LEVEL RESULTS.
Celebrations are well under way at Christ College, Brecon, as pupils receive their A level results. The school has established a reputation for excellence in some of the more challenging A level subjects, with particularly impressive results in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, and with Engineering proving the most popular degree course among this year’s leavers.
An astonishing 79% of grades in Maths and Further Maths and no fewer than 82% of Physics grades were at the top A and A* grades. The overall statistics show 72% of all grades at A*-B, with a 99% pass rate. All candidates pursuing the Extended Project Qualification, which develops research, extended writing, planning and presentation skills, were awarded A*-B grades. 100% of those studying Art, Religious Studies, Spanish and History were also rewarded with the A*-B grades needed for access to the top universities and courses.
Statistics can only ever tell part of the story, and it is the individual tales of achievement and ambition that turn these figures into human success stories. Among the large group of pupils (25% of the year group) achieving 3 As or better is local girl Rosie Evans, from Cradoc, near Brecon, who gained an impressive 3A* grades in her chosen subjects of French, Spanish and Photography, and who will be moving on to the University of Bath to study French and Spanish next year.
Mrs Emma Taylor, Head of Christ College, said ‘A* grades in Modern Languages are notoriously difficult to get and for Rosie to be awarded two of them demonstrates not only natural linguistic talent but also consistent and committed hard work. Rosie has other talents, too; she is an accomplished musician and dancer, and intends to pursue both ballet and music alongside her studies when she heads to university. As the fourth member of her high-achieving family to attend Christ College, Rosie has rounded off the Evans family’s contributions to the school in style!’
Other top performers include Emily Devoy, from Leominster, whose A*AA grades see her safely on her way to train as a doctor at Sheffield University, and Elizabeth Mashova, who joined the Sixth Form at Christ College on a scholarship from Bulgaria, gains A*A*A and heads off to read History at King’s College London.
Some of the most able pupils in the group are bound for Engineering courses, with Matthew Dempsey, from Brecon, gaining A*A*A and heading to Nottingham, Ben Cuthbertson-Smith from Bwlch, achieving A*AA and bound for Loughborough, and Michael Chan from Hong Kong taking his A*AA grades to University College, London for the same course.
Last year’s top performer, Neil Wang, who gained 4 A* grades, has since gained a place at Oxford University to read Chemical Engineering, and this year the group is topped by David Dai, from Swansea whose 3A* and 2 A grades see him bound for Imperial College London to read Physics. Local boy Adam Bailey’s A*AA grades open the door to a Physics and Astrophysics degree at Bath University, which is among the most popular destinations for Christ College pupils. Fred Davies, from Crickhowell also got into his first choice university, Southampton, to study Accoustical Engineering.
Almost all this year’s leavers gained the required grades for their first choice of course and university, with a wide range of interests and ambitions between them, from Computer Animation to Theology and from Accounting and Finance to Real Estate.
Mrs Taylor said ‘We wish this diverse and talented group of young people every possible success and happiness as their results open the door to exciting futures for them all.’
