Over 200 people (parents, pupils, Old Chigwellians and more) gathered to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Chigwell School’s Chapel on 28th April 2024. The bells of St Mary’s Church signalled the start of the centenary celebration and were rung by former Head Boys, Head Girls and Praefects as a nod to traditions and values that span generations. Music was provided by the school’s Chapel Choir and Junior Chamber Choir, and featured Mr James Botcher, soloist.
The afternoon reception, featuring a presentation from the school’s Archivist, provided opportunity for reflection and reminiscence, allowing guests to connect with the school’s past and appreciate its journey over the past century.
Mr Damian King, Head of Chigwell School shared, “It was a significant moment for the Chigwell School community to come together to mark an important milestone in the Chapel’s history.”
Roderick Lonsdale, Teacher of English at Chigwell School added, “The organ had recently been rebuilt and sounded magnificent. The booklet that accompanied the service was beautifully presented and prepared, a credit to the archival team.”
Collaborative efforts of Revd David Wilson, Mr Howard Ebden, Miss Ciara McCarthy, Mr Simon Winters, and Mr James Bluff made the celebration a success.
