Bromsgrove School – The Chicken ‘flew’ at Rockingham
06 Jun 2017
Bromsgrove School’s ‘Chicken’ flew to the finish line on Wednesday 3rd May and was awarded first placed kit car at the Season Opener at Rockingham Raceway.
The Chicken was finally released after a winter of heavy modifications and development where it was put on a strict diet and lost at least 10kgs in weight; had a host of new aero parts fitted to create less drag and was treated to a new yellow powder coated frame.
The venue for its first race of the season was a team favourite and regular stomping ground for the car, Rockingham Raceway in Northampton. Thirty-seven teams attended the event with new Greenpower partners (and sponsors) BMW and Siemens. Since last season, the team has climbed yet again in the world standings from 49th to 28th overall and are now the 2nd fastest Kitcar on the planet!
The Chicken has been ranked as potentially the 4th fastest F24 car as numbers 1, 9 and 22 were out in force for the seasonal opener. With a dozen new team members in attendance, Bromsgrove had to make strategic driver choices for optimum performance during a race.
Rockingham is a daunting track and it surprised some of Bromsgrove’s students with the sheer vastness and size of the 1.47 mile circuit.
The team collected the trophy and medals at the end of the day and seemed to really enjoy all aspects of the race day experience. With a new sponsor in the pipeline, more modifications to work on and strategies to develop, Team Chicken will be the team to beat.
Mr Steve Broadbent, Teacher of Design Technology said “I would like to thank Mr Matthews and the team for their unflinching efforts on the day – Will Edwards, Scarlett Bond, Cameron Chance, Molly-Jo Sward, Nathan Summers, Hamish Sutherland, Alek Florov, Frankie McCaig, Champion Pongpaew, Luke Weller, Lucy Jenkins and Ellie Chan. I couldn’t be more proud”.
