Bromsgrove School dominates success at the County Tennis Championships

On Saturday 12th May, pupils from Bromsgrove School enjoyed an outstanding weekend of tennis success at the Hereford and Worcestershire LTA U14 and U16 Boys’ and Girls’ County Doubles Tournament, held at Malvern College and Malvern St James.

In the U16 Girls’ Doubles, from a draw of ten pairs, the Bromsgrove pairing of Bobby Mekushina with Claudia Bullock won group 1 and Gemma Calthorpe with Maisie Hucker were runners up in group 2. This meant they met in the semi-final, with Bobby and Claudia winning and reaching the final. The final saw Milly and Lucy Short from King’s v Bobby and Claudia from Bromsgrove, with Bobby and Claudia winning the final 6-1. They were crowned Girls’ U16 Doubles County Champions.

In the U14 Girls’ Doubles, from a draw of nine pairs, the Bromsgrove pairing of Isabelle O’Connor with Lucy McLoughlin won group 1 and Anabel Crowder, with Isabelle Jones won group 2. Both pairs made it through to the final. Isabelle O’Conner and Lucy McLoughlin won the final 7-6 and were crowned Girls’ U14 Doubles County Champions.

In the U14 Boys’ Doubles, Bromsgrove reached the final which was Stuart Shannon with Cameron Owen v Sam Casidy and Sam Laider from The Downs, Malvern – Score 4-0

Stuart Shannon and Cameron Owen were crowned Boys’ U14 Doubles County Champions.

In the Scott Cup (Boys’ U18 Singles) from a draw of 16, three out of the four semi-finalists were players from Bromsgrove School. The final was Hans Barre-Schmidt (Malvern College) v Stuart Shannon (Bromsgrove). Stuart won 4-2, 5-3 in the final and he was crowned The Scott Cup U18 Boys’ Singles Winner.

In the Smyth Cup (Girls’ U18 Singles), from a draw of sixteen, all four semi-finalists were from Bromsgrove School. The final saw Georgie Jeynes-Cupper v Claudia Bullock who were both from Bromsgrove, with Georgie winning 4-1, 4-0 who was crowned The Smyth Cup U18 Girls’ Singles Winner.

Richard Lawton, Director of Tennis said “over the last four years, the tennis programme at Bromsgrove School has grown from strength to strength, resulting in success that has not been seen for 20 years. The School has won five out of a possible six trophies at the Hereford and Worcestershire County Championships, which is truly remarkable. We are all delighted with the fantastic performances by the pupils, especially Stuart, who not only won the U14 Doubles title but also the U18 Singles title, playing two age groups up! Congratulations to all!”
