Bromsgrove Retain NatWest Cup
18 Mar 2016
Bromsgrove School became only the sixth school ever to retain the main NatWest Schools U18 Cup this week. The prestigious event held at Twickenham was the last of the games to be played on Wednesday and Bromsgrove came away deserved winners with an impressive 18-10 score line.
Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Wakefield had the better of the two starts, leading 10-3 in the first 20 minutes. However, a strong Bromsgrove side continued to battle and eventually gained two tries from their number 8, and Man of the Match winner, Beck Cutting and a third from winger Cooper Bent. Whilst the match continued to ebb and flow throughout, this put Bromsgrove in a strong position pushing for the win.
The atmosphere from both sets of fans was fantastic throughout the match. Choruses of “Yorkshire” and “Come on you Reds” could be heard as the crowds got behind all the players.
This sees the continuation of the brilliant run of rugby being seen at Bromsgrove at present, throughout the school. Recent successes can be seen in the Prep School Rugby 7s where most recently the U13s reached the final of the prestigious Roslyn Park Tournament this week.
Tony Window, Director of Rugby at Bromsgrove, said “In a physical encounter we were made to work exceptionally hard for our second successive NatWest title yesterday by a very well organised and committed QEGS team. The boys showed a tremendous amount of character and team spirit, first come from 10 -3 behind, but then to hold onto a slender 18-10 lead at the end of the match following a period of sustained pressure from QEGS. It has been a pleasure for both myself and Mr Mullan to coach this team, they have worked very hard and now have their just rewards for all their efforts”.
The School is very proud of the team and its coaches on this magnificent achievement.
