Abbey Gate College Hosts Annual  Margaret Caven Music Competition

The annual Margaret Caven House Music competition was held recently at Abbey Gate College and was adjudicated by Mr Philip Dewhurst.

The Inter-House competition saw over 90 entrants aged 11 to 18 participate in classes held throughout the day, with the winning competitors invited to attend the final in the evening where they performed before an audience of pupils and parents.

Categories included piano, brass, woodwind, percussion and strings in addition to solo, duet and ensemble performances.

Adjudicator, Philip Dewhurst an examiner for Trinity College London and an experienced GCSE and A level moderator, awarded the Margaret Caven Music Salver for ‘Best Performance of the Day’ to Ben Edwardson (U6) for his performance of ‘Cantaloupe Island’ by Herbie Hancock. Other outstanding performers included Felix Gideonse (piano), Henry Smith (tuba) and Oisin Middleton (percussion).

Head of Music, James Andrews said: “The standard was very high across the board and the adjudicator had a very difficult job. The final was of an excellent standard and showcased a great variety of talent.”

The winning House that accumulated the most points and won the shield was Ripley.
