Wellington School Pupil Wins England Cricket Cap

29 Mar 2019

A Wellington School pupil has been recognised with a prestigious sporting award.

Congratulations to Year 11 student Ali Layard who travelled to Lord’s CC, the home of cricket, to receive his full England Cap from Ashley Giles, in his first official engagement as Managing Director of the ECB. Ali became the youngest capped International cricketer when he played for England in the Physical Disability (PD) VitalityT20 Tri Series v Pakistan and Bangladesh last summer, 2018.

Ali trains regularly with the England PD squad and is hoping to be selected for the World Cup being held in the UK this summer. Ali is also in the (able-bodied) Somerset County U17 Winter squad and training hard with them too.

Ali sustained life changing injuries when his legs were caught in the propeller of a narrowboat. Ali’s legs were terribly injured, requiring hospitalisation for four months and numerous complicated operations. Despite being told he would not walk unaided again, Ali’s personal resilience and hard work has led to him becoming an outstanding athlete and a splendid young man.
