Trinity students sail through to national business final

Business-savvy students from Trinity School beat off competition from local schools and colleges to win the Croydon heat of the BASE National
Business competition run by chartered accountancy body, ICAEW.

Trinity School pupils impressed the judges when taking on the role of ICAEW Chartered Accountants for the regional heat on 19 November 2014, sending them sailing through to represent Croydon at the National Final in June. The students had less than two hours to analyse a business situation before presenting their ideas to a panel of business professionals.

This was one of 46 heats with more than 500 competing teams nationwide. BASE brings schools, students and employers together to develop key employability skills in young people, and improves awareness of a career in chartered accountancy.
School Head Mark Bishop said: “I am very proud of our students. They displayed excellent critical thinking, team work and confidence and I’m delighted Trinity School will be represented in the final.”

Trinity student Zoe Wells (Y13 – age 18) said: “The task was challenging but fulfilling and we really enjoyed the day.”

Fellow competitor Adam Childs (Y13 – age 18) added: “To present in front of such a large audience was intimidating but, having got through it, it
has really boosted our confidence and we are looking forward to the final.”

Ceri Morgan, Teacher of Business Studies at Trinity School, said: “The students showed real business flair. They didn’t just draw on their text book knowledge; they put themselves in their client’s shoes and advised them accordingly. We are all looking forward to the final in Birmingham.”

The BASE competition was supported by local firms including EY and BDO who acted as professional mentors and judges.
