Sibford School – PUPILS DIVE DEEP UNDER THE SEA

In the words of Sebastian, the crab from Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Junior pupils at Sibford School near Banbury are going ‘under the sea’ this half term as they learn about all things maritime.

For six weeks, all lessons will be based on a special ‘Under the Waves’ creative curriculum.

To date this has seen the youngsters finding out about the undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau, experimenting with the physics of Cartesian Divers, learning about the different food chains of creatures that live in the Atlantic Ocean, and uncovering the lost city of Atlantis.

Art lessons have seen the evolution of a host of flora and fauna from the undersea world popping up all over the school including giant rainbow fish, deep sea divers and clay turtles.

Even the nursery children have got involved, with activities centred around the book ‘Tiddler’ by Julia Donaldson.

And as a highlight, next month will see the whole of the Junior School travelling to Birmingham to visit the National Sea Life Centre.

Junior School assistant head, Edward Rossiter explained: “The children love the creative curriculum. They become really motivated when they see how different subjects can be related to a central theme and it really does stimulate their learning.”
