SEDBERGH SCHOOL TO HOST LANCASHIRE CRICKET FIXTURE

19 Mar 2019

Sedbergh School are delighted and honoured to announce that we will be hosting Lancashire Cricket’s Specsavers County Championship match against Durham, which starts on Sunday 30th June 2019.

Having successfully hosted three-day MCCA Cumberland and Red Rose Academy fixtures over recent years, we are excited to welcome first class cricket to our ground.

We have well-established links with Lancashire Cricket through the Club’s Academy playing one annual 50 over fixture against Sedbergh’s First Team, whilst Lancashire age-group players Oliver Green (W), Evan Williams (S) and Tom Aspinwall (W) all currently attend Sedbergh School. OS Chris Sanders (E), who is studying at Loughborough University, is currently a bowler for Lancashire.

Our Headmaster, Dan Harrison, has commented: “We are delighted to work with Lancashire Cricket Club. Lancashire Cricket Club are keen to engage with Cumbria and it’s Cricket – Over the years, many cricketing youngsters have attended Sedbergh School and have gone on to play first-class domestic and international cricket.

Cricket at Sedbergh School has never been more popular than it is now. Pupils are excited at the prospect of first-class cricketers playing on the same field they do every week.”

Martin Speight, former Durham and Sussex player and Head of Cricket at Sedbergh, explained the quality of cricket we see here at Sedbergh: “Sedbergh School has developed a very intensive all year round cricket programme giving its pupils the opportunity to play cricket at all levels from beginner to challenging nationally, reaching seven National schools’ finals in the past eight years and most recently culminating in the under 18s being crowned national T20 champions in 2017.”

“Current school captain George Hill, who has just returned from the England Young Lions tour of Bangladesh, won the coveted Cricket Society’s Wetherell Award for The Leading All Rounder in Schools Cricket for 2018.”

In addition to the school programme, the Easter and Summer 4-day residential courses run by Martin Speight give boys and girls, aged between 10-15, in-depth coaching in a challenging but fun environment. In recent years the courses have helped develop players who have gone on to play club, county, regional and national age group cricket.
