Millfield Lower Sixth student Matthew Rees has won the British Formula 4 title.
The fifteen year old, who races with JHR Developments, won all three championships this season with the team: the overall title, rookie and the team championship. A trio of titles which the team have never achieved in the six years that they have been competing.
The team are currently assessing options for next year’s competitive schedule, with potential avenues including competing with Formula Regional European Championships (FRECA), European F4 and GB3.
Matthew, who joined Millfield Prep School in Year 5, is studying A levels in Business, History and Physics. He is passionate about getting his A levels whilst maintaining a busy training and competitive racing schedule, hoping to continue his driving career or work in a business field post Millfield.
Matthew says, “Millfield is a school which has understanding of the demands and expectations on an elite level sportsperson and provide you with a unique and tailored timetable to allow you to juggle both your academics and sport without you feeling overwhelmed. This is something that I doubt that I would have had in any other school and they can take some credit for the successes of this year.”
Matthew’s houseparent, John Bishop, says, “We are absolutely thrilled to see Matthew win the British F4 Championship and look forward to seeing where this will take him next. He has had to show dedication and resilience in pursuing his ambition to be a racing driver, whilst continuing with his A level studies at school.”
Matthew has Old Millfieldian, British-Belgian racing driver Lando Norris to look up to. He attended Millfield Prep School from 2006-2015 and is a currently competiting in Formula One with McClaren. OMs Sam Bird (Formula E Envision Virgin Racing) and Benji Goethe (W Racing Team) are also professional drivers in the industry.
