Millfield exam results show record high 12% A* grades

Millfield pupils are celebrating today after achieving a record high 12% A* or equivalent grade at A Level, Pre-U and BTEC.

Millfield’s A*- A grades or equivalent are 34%, this is against a national decline in top grades with the national average for this year at 25.5%. 37 pupils achieved 3 or more A grades or equivalent with one pupil, Candice Lam, gaining an excellent 4 A* grades. The overall pass rate was 99%.

With a cohort of 281 pupils in Upper Sixth, taking 31 different subjects, Millfield is the largest independent sixth form in the country. Our highest achieving 100 pupils (a comparable size with most other independent school Sixth Forms) achieved an excellent 28% A* grades or equivalent and 94% A*- B grades.

Exceptional individual achievements include:

Top achiever Candice Lam received four A*s in Chemistry, Economics, Mathematics and Psychology.

While at Millfield, Candice achieved a gold award in the 2018 Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and scored in the 90th representative percentile in her SAT (US college admissions exam) results. Candice is also a talented swimmer, representing Hong Kong on a number of occasions, and has just qualified to represent Hong Kong in India this September. Candice will now study Medicine at The University of Hong Kong.

William Fuller achieved three A*s in Further Mathematics, Mathematics and Physics. Will, who also attended Millfield Prep from 2011-2013, received academic honours for his GCSE performance in Year 11 and will attend the University of Bristol to study Mathematics.

Emily Gore achieved three A*s in Art and Design, Business Studies and English Literature. Emily was a Prefect and took part in swimming while at Millfield, as well as volunteering at a local care home as part of the EAGLES programme. She will now study English Literature at University of Manchester.

Ben Harding achieved three A*s in Biology, Geography and Physical Education. While at Millfield, Ben played 1st team football and was one of the stand out players during the last season. Ben will attend the University of Nottingham to study Physiotherapy.

Sophie Kelly achieved three A*s in Biology, English Literature and Psychology. While at Millfield, Sophie took part in show jumping up to 1.10m, and has had offers from Durham University, the University of Exeter, Loughborough University and the University of Nottingham. She will be taking a gap year.

Tom Treaddell achieved three A*s in Economics, Geography and Mathematics. Tom was Head of house and a Prefect, lead the Economic Committee and was part of the Eco, charity and catering committees. Tom was also 3rd Rugby team captain, and took part in swimming, football, squash, debating and athletics while at school. Tom will study Business Economics at the University of Exeter.

Katie Maddock achieved an A* in Mathematics, and three As in Further Mathematics, Latin and Physics. Katie will now go on to study Physics at the University of Oxford. Katie also attended Millfield Prep from 2011-2013. While at Millfield, Katie was Head of House, a member of the Debating team at Model United Nations and European Youth Parliament. Katie also took part in a number of academic competitions and Olympiads and won a top academic prize in the Richard Barker Memorial Cup for writing, translating and performing a play in Latin.

William Strutt achieved an A* in Mathematics, and three As in Physics, Further Mathematics and Economics. William attended Millfield Prep from 2009-2013. While at Millfield, William was a member of the 1st XI hockey squad. William will now study Physics at University of Exeter.

Yasemin Sazak achieved the highest grade possible in BTEC Art and Design with D*D*D*. Yasemin has a passion for painting and hopes to study Fine Art at Kingston University.

Claudia Tsen achieved D*D* in BTEC Enterprise and Entrepreneurship and had already gained a D3 in Pre-U Chinese last year (equivalent to an A at A level). While at Millfield, Claudia won a national Peter Jones Academy award with her team for the ‘Developing a Product Concept’ challenge set by Reggae Reggae sauce creator, Levi Roots. Claudia will study Business Management with a year in Industry at the University of Liverpool.

Edvard Brodskiy achieved two A*s in Computer Science and Mathematics and two As in Further Mathematics and Physics. While at school, Edvard gained a silver award in the BPhO Physics Olympiad and was involved in numerous academic co-curricular groups. Edvard hopes to study Computer Science with Intelligent Systems at Kings College, London.

Amy Zhang achieved D*D*D in BTEC Art & Design and a C in Chinese. Amy plays guitar and was part of the Badminton Squad while at Millfield. She hopes to study Design for Film and Television at Nottingham Trent University.

Oska Zaky achieved D*D* in BTEC Music, as well as an A in Photography and a B in Media Studies. Oska attended Millfield Prep from 2006- 2013. Oska was Head Boy in the Spring Term, was fencing captain and has contributed widely to the music programme at Millfield. Oska has a place at the Leeds College of Music and also has a successful music career outside of school, and will now go on to pursue his career in music with collaborations in America.

Annabel Hames achieved two A*s in Economics and Geography and an A in Mathematics. Annabel also achieved an A grade in the Extended Project Qualification. Annabel was Head of House and will now study Economics with Finance at the University of Edinburgh.

Florence Lunnon achieved two A*s in English Literature and Music and an A in Mathematics. Florence was Head Girl for the Autumn Term, was heavily involved in the music programme at Millfield and  played the lead role of Mrs Lovett in Millfield’s spring musical Sweeney Todd. Florence will now go on to study Liberal Arts at Durham University.

Pippa Chatikavanij achieved two A*s in DT (Product Design) and Economics and an A in Mathematics. Pippa was a Prefect and played tennis to a high level at Millfield. Pippa will now study Economics at the University of Nottingham.

Moradeyo Olaitan achieved two A*s in Biology and Psychology and an A in Chemistry. While at Millfield, Moradeyo sang with Millfield Music and will now study Medicine at Brighton & Sussex Medical School.

Jacob St-Germain achieved two A*s in Computer Science and Mathematics and an A in Economics. While at Millfield, Jacob achieved a Gold certificate in UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge, as well as qualifying for the British Swimming Championships and the Canadian Nationals. Jacob will now go on to study Computer Programming at Université Laval, Québec.

Charles Gorringe achieved D*D*D in BTEC Art & Design. While at Millfield, Charlie exhibited his work at the Red Brick Exhibition Space in Glastonbury. Charles will now study Visual Communication at Arts University Bournemouth.

Chiara Jacobs achieved D*D*D in BTEC Art & Design. While at Millfield, Chiara was a swimmer and also exhibited her work at the Red Brick Exhibition Space in Glastonbury. Chiara will now be taking a gap year.

Aria Kalmar achieved D*D*D in BTEC Art & Design. A talented dancer, while at Millfield Aria performed as part of high-level dance troupe Bazique and performed a solo at the Dance Show. Aria received offers from Fashion and Design College Istituto Marangoni, Regent’s University London and Southampton Solent.

Phichayada Rodsawaeng achieved D*D*D in BTEC Art & Design. While at Millfield, Phichayada sang soprano and will now study Fashion Textiles at University of the Arts London.

In SAT results, the US college admissions exam, 76 Millfield pupils took the exam, with Millfield pupil Jimmy Cheng achieving a score in the top 1% of all candidates who took the exam globally. Jimmy achieved 1510/1600, which is Millfield’s highest mark to date.

Millfield Headmaster Gavin Horgan said: “It is testament to our pupils’ hard work and the quality of teaching at Millfield that we have seen a record high in A* or equivalent grades. Millfield is an academic school where teaching and coaching complement each other to provide a unique learning experience for each individual. We will continue to adapt how we educate to bring the best outcomes for all our pupils whatever their ability. We recognise the importance of examinations but never at the expense of happiness. I wish all of our pupils the best on the next stage of their lives and with their future careers.”
