    The King’s School Gloucester

With small classes and inspiring teachers, King’s offers a vibrant culture of endeavour and achievement in the historic setting of Gloucester Cathedral.  The school is small enough for us to know each child and to value them as an individual, yet large enough to offer a very wide range of academic subjects and a spectacular array of co-curricular opportunities.

Our subject teachers are specialists in their field and are therefore skilled at helping every pupil fulfil their academic potential. Our results each year are exceptional and our pupils develop the confidence, resilience and skills to prepare them for the rapidly changing world ahead.

King’s offer an outstanding academic education: in 2023, 25% of A Level grades were A*/A and 59% were A*-B and in the GCSE exams, one in five results were at the top Grade 9 and 51% of pupils achieved Grades 9-7.

We celebrate the achievements of all our pupils across the academic spectrum and we have pupils who go on to study Apprenticeships, join the world of work, or specialise in colleges of Fine Art or Music.

On average, our Value-Added score each year is around 0.5 in every single subject at GCSE.

However, we offer more than a superb academic education: we also offer an education of character: building resilience, working with others, having a growth mindset, being ambitious, yet also kind.

    Facilities

On arrival at The King’s School, visitors always comment on our stunning campus of historic buildings and tranquil gardens set against the backdrop of glorious Gloucester Cathedral.

Little King’s, our kindergarten, caters for children from age 3 to 5. It is located within the main King’s Junior School, making the move at age 5 from the Reception class into Year 1, a less daunting experience. Little King’s offers plenty of hands-on, learning opportunities to inspire and motivate the children and we have our own Forest School within the grounds of the school to provide them with outdoor learning experiences.

Music has been at the centre of our School ever since we began to provide choristers for the Cathedral over 500 years ago. Today, the Chapel Choir leads major services, such as the Remembrance Service and Carol Service, in the Cathedral throughout the school year. There are also many other highly accomplished choirs and singing groups, as well as a full orchestra and chamber orchestra, swing and rock band, which perform regularly at concerts and community events. So whether a pupil is just starting on their musical journey or refining exceptional talent, our aim is to help each student fulfil their potential and ensure their musical experience at King’s will continue to enrich their lives.

Performing Arts at King’s is inclusive, diverse and unashamedly ambitious. Our Performing Arts spaces include the refurbished Ivor Gurney Hall, outdoor amphitheatre in Dulverton gardens and a state-of-the art Black Box Theatre gives our pupils the space and facilities in which to develop their talents. Our drama programme immerses pupils in a wealth of dramatic experience from the classics to the best of contemporary theatre and the opportunities to become involved in performance and production are exceptional – either on stage or behind the scenes. Taught by our drama specialists in small groups, drama brings big benefits to personal development; giving pupils confidence, team building skills and, for some, the opportunity to “find their voice”and to learn to express themselves. Some of our pupils have gone on the build successful careers in the professional theatre.

    King's Gloucester

    sport at King’s Gloucester

Sport is genuinely for all at King’s and we are proud of the pupils’ achievements – whether it is representing their Country, County, School or House. Over 75% of our pupils regularly participate in school teams. At Archdeacon Meadow our traditional cricket pavilion overlooks the cricket and rugby pitches, the Sports Centre hosts badminton, netball, tennis and squash courts and hockey matches take place on the new all-weather pitch.  Expert PE staff and coaches, who are specialists in their fields, teach all our students and their aim is to instil a positive and lifelong interest in health and physical activity. Sport, whether at a competitive or social level, plays an important part in achieving this. For high-achievers in sport, we offer pupils our Gifted and Talented programme. This provides professional coaching and a range of opportunities for individuals to develop their prowess. We also arrange major sports tours overseas. In recent years, these have included trips to Malaysia and Singapore, Barbados, Portugal and South Africa, all of which gave our students a superb sporting and cultural experience.

Beyond the curriculum we offer an extensive array of academic enrichment activities. Pupils have the opportunity to explore such topics as architecture, law and palaeography, forensic archaeology, the science of pandemics and chaos theory or similarly mind-stretching topics. Students are invited to after-school lectures given by staff or visiting speakers where medical ethics, epistemology or censorship are typical subjects. Workshops have included a Women in Engineering Day and a Maths Olympiad Challenge. The range of clubs includes: Mandarin, Introduction to Arabic, Tap Dancing, Cookery, Meditation, Java Programming, Knitting and Ultimate Frisbee. From Friday Philosophers to Quidditch, students are certain to discover something to capture their interest and stimulate their imagination.
