BOARDING – Our two boarding houses, Pollard Boys and Ruddle Girls are home to all our boarding pupils. The houses have a warm, friendly atmosphere where pupils feel happy, safe and secure and our supportive and caring environment remains central to the Shebbear College community.

There is always someone to turn to, and our caring and experienced house staff are here to support each and every pupil. Our boarders all have a Housemaster or Housemistress and a Matron who are responsible for their academic, pastoral and social welfare, giving them the security of a family environment whilst at the same time enjoying the freedom to grow and mature.

Within each House, the weekend activities programme is full and varied, meaning that there is rarely a moment where pupils could feel lonely or bored. Weekend activities include Horse Riding, trips to the beach where surfing, sailing and water sports can be enjoyed, shopping trips and days out.

INTERNATIONAL PUPILS – We welcome pupils from all over the world to join our vibrant, happy school! We are home to many international pupils from many different countries. Boarding is offered from the age of 8 – 18 and all of our overseas pupils are fully integrated into the life of the school, and very much a part of our genuinely warm community.

If you live overseas and wish to apply for a place at Shebbear College for your child, he or she will need to take papers in English as an Additional Language and Maths, provide supporting references and undertake an interview either at school or via Skype with a member of staff.

If needed, we may recommend that a pupil receives EAL tuition if their English needs additional support to reach their full academic potential. The EAL department helps such pupils to develop both their English language skills and confidence. We develop each of the main skill areas – speaking, reading, writing and listening – while also helping pupils to understand specific subject-based terminology and language.

The wellbeing, happiness and security of all our pupils is our number one priority and we keep in regular contact with our international pupils to ensure that they are happy at school.

CO-CURRICULAR – At Shebbear we believe that learning should not be restricted to the classroom and as such, we place a great emphasis on our Co-Curricular offering. Activities change each term but the opportunities are endless and there is always something to suit every pupil. From sports teams to music ensembles, drama clubs, film-making, cookery, pottery, computing and a long list of others, everyone is encouraged to join in!

Our activities are designed to broaden horizons and develop personal qualities such as leadership, confidence and tenacity, as well as learning new skills and developing interests. Our wonderful location, close to the sea and moors, means that outdoor pursuits are extremely popular. We also offer a number of enrichment trips within the UK and abroad.

Activities take place during the school day and after school, with our buses leaving at 5pm to accommodate this.

SPORTS – Sport plays an integral role in ensuring that all pupils stay healthy by achieving physical, social, cultural and mental well-being.  We believe that physical activity provides individuals with the opportunity to acquire and develop skills which will stand them in good stead for future challenges and ensures that pupils receive a well-rounded, broad education.  All pupils are encouraged to take part in some form of sporting activity whatever their aspirations or ability and develop an understanding of how their body works in response to exercise.  Above all we emphasise the values of commitment, teamwork, communication and enjoyment, all of which are invaluable in everyday life.

Our fixture list for Games is extensive and competition is encouraged at all levels, giving pupils the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and achieve their aims.  For boys the major games are rugby, football and cricket and for the girls major games are hockey, netball and rounders.  Rugby 7’s is also played by the boys during the Lent Term.  The sports department also runs many inter-house games making physical activity further accessible within the school.

    Scholarships

We offer a range of Scholarships to reflect academic, sporting, musical, creative or artistic talent. We also offer ‘All rounder’ awards to candidates who excel in all areas of school life.

Scholarships are awarded annually to talented pupils who will make an outstanding contribution to the school at Form 1 (Year 7), Form 3 (Year 9) and Lower 6. Scholarships are conditional upon the recipient’s active and full participation in appropriate activities at Shebbear

Scholarships are offered are Academic, Art, Drama, Music, Sports, All Rounder.

    Entrance Requirements

All pupils looking to join our Form 1 (Year 7) or Form 3 (Year 9) are encouraged to attend our Entrance Day in January each year. We are a non selective school and this day is simply designed to help us establish the academic ability and level of each child.
